Gardewine Adds Electric Trucks to Fleet as Part of Sustainable Transportation Initiative

Gardewine - A Woman Announcing about New Electric Shunt Truck

(WINNIPEG, Manitoba, October 2021) Gardewine Group Limited Partnership (“Gardewine“), a leading service provider in the transportation, warehousing, and distribution sector, has announced the addition of a new electric Shunt truck to their existing fleet of vehicles, as part of their Sustainable Transportation Initiative. “We recognize that Manitoba’s transportation industry is responsible for nearly 40% of the province’s total carbon output. As a result, we believe that in order to see meaningful change, our Industry should lead and Government should support this initiative. We are part of an organization that believes in investing in technology for the future. We want Gardewine to be the industry pioneers and serve as a guide and resource for other companies within our sector.” says Mr. Darin Downey, President and Chief Operating Officer at Gardewine.

Gardewine has committed to making an immediate contribution to Manitoba’s Climate Green Plan by creating a short- and long-term plan that is both receptive and adaptive to technology advancements, which will reduce emissions. To date, Gardewine has dedicated over $1.1M towards an equipment electrification program. The new electric vehicles (EVs) are expected to arrive by December 2021, and the first electric parcel vans are expected to arrive by Q1 2022.

The new Shunt trucks are tasked with repositioning trailers at Gardewine’s Winnipeg Terminal. They are charged by a Terra 94/124/1884 CC Dual outlet CCS with a cable management system. Running up to 20 hours a day, 5 days per week, this is one of the first purchases of an electric vehicle of this caliber by a transportation company in Canada.

In 2019/2020 Gardewine replaced 14 propane-powered forklifts with electric forklifts, resulting in an annual reduction of 220 tC02 (tonnes) for each year the electric forklifts have been active. “Witnessing positive change is inspiring, “adds Mr. Downey. “Our customers have come to expect world-class service from our company, and we are proud of what we have accomplished so far. Our hybrid Ford Transit courier vans put into service in 2020 have been a great addition to our fleet, driving cleaner, reducing fuel consumption, and helping us meet our sustainability goals with every mile.”
